Water & water main leak detection
A buried water leak announces itself with a bill, a wet patch, or a pressure drop, almost never at the point where the pipe actually failed. We locate the failure before anyone opens the ground.
Do not dig to find it. Dig to fix it.
Exploratory excavation is the expensive way to find a leak: every hole that misses costs money, disruption and reinstatement, and the wet ground around a leak is misleading about where the leak is.
Locating first turns an open-ended dig into one hole in the right place.
How a buried leak gives itself away
Pressurised water escaping through a break makes noise, and that sound carries along the pipe much further than the water does. Ground microphones placed on the surface pick it up, and the leak is loudest directly above itself.
Where a line runs between two points we can reach, correlation does better. The same leak sound arrives at two sensors at slightly different times, and the difference, with the pipe material and distance known, puts the break within a few feet.
Neither method requires opening the ground. That matters because the surface symptom of a buried leak is often nowhere near the break: water travels along the trench, follows the pipe bedding, and surfaces wherever it finds the easiest route. Digging where it is wet is how a repair turns into three holes.
Where this comes up
Water mains and service lines, irrigation systems, campus and industrial distribution, and leaks under slabs and pavements. Often alongside utility locating, because knowing where the line runs is half of finding where it failed.
