Before a saw or a core bit goes into a slab, it is worth knowing what is inside it. Ground penetrating radar maps rebar, post-tension cables, conduit and voids without touching the structure.
Post-tension cable is the one that ends badly
Cutting rebar weakens a slab and costs a repair. Cutting a post-tension cable releases stored energy instantly. It is a life-safety event, and it can compromise a structural bay well beyond the hole you were making.
There is no reliable way to tell from the surface which slabs are post-tensioned. Scanning is how you find out before the cut, rather than during it.
What scanning answers
Marked on the deck: where the steel runs, where the clear zones are, and where the opening should move to.
Thickness and depth of cover, from one side, without coring to find out.
Voids beneath slabs and pavements, usually the reason something is cracking or sinking.
Working outside rather than inside? That is private utility locating.
